Why travelers stop here
Dongmyeong Port is a port located in the northeast of Sokcho-si, boasting a relatively large scale compared to surrounding ports. A breakwater has been constructed, and many vessels, including fishing boats, are anchored there. Visitors can enjoy fishing on the built breakwater, and there is a live fish market near the entrance of the breakwater where various seafood can be tasted. There is a terminal from which passenger ships for Geumgangsan (Mount Kumgang) tours departed, and an international route has been established, with an international passenger terminal connecting Russia and China. The Sokcho International Passenger Terminal is also frequently used by small-scale peddler traders dealing with Russia and China, as well as for Baekdusan (Mount Baekdu) tours.
Dongmyeong means 'the sun rises in the east and brings light,' and true to its name, it is famous for its sunrise. Every January 1st, many tourists visit to see the sunrise rising over the vast East Sea. Famous sunrise spots around the port include Yeonggeumjeong, the Yeonggeumjeong Sunrise Pavilion, Sokcho Observatory, and the coastal road.
