Bongjeong Lotus Village

Bongjeong Lotus Village is a rural experience and recreation village located in Dandong-dong, Donghae-si, Gangwon-do. The village is famous for its wide lotus complex covering 3,600㎡. In summer, red and white lotuses bloom together in the lotus complex called 'Bongjeong Yeondang'. The village is also called 'Bonghwangsaemaeul' (Phoenix Village) because the shape of the village seen from above resembles a phoenix. The 'Bonghwangchum' (Phoenix Dance), in which villagers perform dances of phoenixes and cranes to the rhythm of Gangwon-do Arirang, is a source of pride for Bongjeong Lotus Village. Around the end of July, when the lotuses are in full bloom, the village's biggest event, the Lotus and Natural Dyeing Festival, takes place. Various attractions are offered, including selling foods made with lotus leaves, natural dyeing experiences, and various events. At other times, visitors can participate in experience programs run by the village. The main programs are food experiences enjoyable for both children and adults, such as strawberry picking, harvesting crops like corn, potatoes, and sweet potatoes, and making lotus leaf sujebi (hand-torn noodle soup) with lotus leaf powder and flour. Also meaningful are the traditional house experience, where visitors can tour a 300-year-old traditional hanok, and natural dyeing experiences, such as dyeing scarves. The village also sells lotus leaf tea, lotus leaf powder, and lotus leaf rice made from lotus leaves picked by the residents.
