Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Gangneung Ogeumjip is the only thatched house located in the center of Gangneung, built in the late Joseon Dynasty. The structure is a small double-layered house with 3 kan (bays) in the front and 2 kan on the sides. There are two rooms on the left and a kitchen on the right. In the double-layered style, the inner room (anbang) and a small room (golbang) are placed at the back, with a wooden veranda (toenmaru) at the front. The corner pillars are set leaning inward, and instead of using nails, joinery and straw ropes were used. Notably, the thatched roof on the kitchen side extends down close to the ground. The walls are made of earth, and the woodwork is rather rough. Earthen and stone walls surround the house. The floor plan is close to the shape of the character '田' (jeon), but it is a unique house that gives a feeling of a pit house (umjip), showcasing Korea's typical traditional architectural style.
