Kim Jong-gil House

강원특별자치도 영월군 주천면 고가옥길 27

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

This house features a ㄱ-shaped inner wing (anchae) placed on flat land and a ㅡ-shaped detached sarangchae (men's quarters), forming an overall ㄷ-shaped layout. The inner wing has a wooden floor hall (daecheong) at the center, with a cross-room (geonneonbang) and kitchen on the right, and an upper room (utbang), main room (anbang), kitchen, and sarangbang (study/guest room) on the left. The sarangbang appears to have been converted from a storage room attached to the kitchen. A wooden veranda (toenmaru) was installed outside the upper room and main room, and the ㄱ-shaped veranda starting from the front of the cross-room extends to the front of the main room. The haengnangchae (servants' quarters) was built later, with a shed on the left of the main gate and a large room and kitchen on the right. This house was built in the 27th year of King Sunjo of the Joseon Dynasty, and its overall composition follows the traditional folk house style of the Yeongseo region.
