강원특별자치도 화천군 하남면 춘화로 3370

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Wirari Chilcheung Seoktap is a seven-story stone pagoda from the Goryeo Dynasty located in Hwacheon-gun, Gangwon-do. At the time of excavation, the base and up to the third story retained their original form, but from the fourth story upward, the body stones were lost and only the roof stones remained. The base members, body stones, and roof stones that were scattered in all directions were gathered and re-erected. The roof stones and the body stones of the first, second, and third stories are original, while the body stones above the fourth story were supplemented during restoration in 1975. The pagoda's form is that of a seven-story body placed on a large base stone. The body stones of the pagoda have pillar shapes carved at each corner, and the height of the second story decreases significantly compared to the first, with subsequent stories decreasing only slightly. The roof stones have three-tiered supports on their undersides, and the eaves are horizontal but slightly upturned at the four corners. At the top, all finial decorations have been lost, leaving only a single round stone. Although smaller in scale, the carving of pillars on the body stones and the three-tiered roof supports are very similar in style and technique to Namgyewon Chilcheung Seoktap, suggesting that the two pagodas were built around the same period.
