Why travelers stop here
Batdonae means 'a village by a stream where water flows outward.' The Jukcheon River, which originates from the foot of Taegisan Mountain in Hoengseong-gun and passes through Anheung-myeon and Gangrim-myeon, reaches Suju-myeon and Jukcheon-myeon in Yeongwol-gun, forming several water circles (mul-dori-dong) along the way before flowing into the river. As it passes Docheon-ri, the river temporarily changes its name to Seomani River. In summer, Seomani River serves as a popular summer resort for river bathing. With first-grade water flowing and the village located east of Chiaksan National Park, the scenery is beautiful and the people are warm-hearted. It is a small village bordering Songgye-ri, Sillim-myeon, Wonju, with Bisan Mountain as its main peak. The residents primarily cultivate rice, soybeans, corn, tomatoes, and sesame, living as a natural village.
In August 2020, Yeongwol-gun and the residents of Docheon 2-ri, Jukcheon-myeon, held the completion ceremony for the Batdonae Dure Plaza at the former Docheon Elementary School. The Batdonae Dure Plaza, reborn as a complex cultural space, was created by remodeling the closed Docheon Elementary School. With a total floor area of 288㎡, it includes a workshop conference room (auditorium), kitchen, accommodation facilities, a foot volleyball court, parking lot, and a rural experience and resort village office. The neglected closed school was remodeled to serve as a space for resident club activities, communal meals, and regular rural experience programs, providing better convenience facilities for tourists and visitors to the village.
