Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

The Second Tunnel in Cheorwon is an invasion tunnel discovered in 1975 in Hwasaljang-ri, Cheorwon-gun, Gangwon-do. It is a tunnel with a total length of 3.5 km, extending 2.4 km north-south and reaching 1.1 km to the Military Demarcation Line, with a capacity to move approximately 30,000 troops per hour. Of this, the section open for tours is 500 m. Inside the tunnel, there is a plaza where large numbers of troops could gather, and the exit branches into three directions. When the Second Tunnel was discovered, seven South Korean soldiers searching the area were killed by North Korean forces. In accordance with the development plan for the Iron Triangle Battlefield, the Second Tunnel was developed into a representative security tourism site in South Korea, and many tourists visit every year. Inside the Second Tunnel, there is an exhibition hall that explains the tunnel's structure and North Korea's invasion plans. The view of the DMZ from the Second Tunnel, which symbolizes the division of the two Koreas, is exceptionally beautiful. Currently, it is operated by Cheorwon-gun as part of the DMZ Peace Tourism course, and nearby attractions include the Cheorwon Peace Observatory, monorail, and the Cheorwon Crane Ecology Center, among other tour courses.
