Sapseulbong Peak (Ice Cream Hill)

Sapseulbong Peak is a low mountain rising 219 meters above sea level in the middle of the vast Jaesongpyeon field. Due to its advantageous location, during the Korean War it was the site of fierce battles and intense artillery bombardment between the opposing forces, and the mountain is said to have melted like ice cream, hence the name Ice Cream Hill. In the past, there was a village called Sapsong-ri at the foot of this mountain, so the mountain was called Sapsongbong Peak (Sapseulbong is a colloquial variant of Sapsongbong). It was also called Tugubong Peak because its shape resembles a helmet. Additionally, during the Goryeo Dynasty, a beacon tower was built on the summit of Sapseulbong Peak, connecting the Jinchonsan beacon tower in Pyeonggang to the north and the Halmi Mountain (Gusubong Peak) beacon tower to the south.
