Cheongwonsa Temple in Taebaek was founded in 1955 by the founder of the nearby Hamtae Coal Mine to pray for the prevention of accidents involving miners and to enshrine the spirits of miners who died at the coal face. On the right side of the courtyard is a pond called Yongdam, which is said by legend to be connected to the summit of Taebaeksan Mountain via an underground waterway. Additionally, there is a nine-story stone pagoda within the temple grounds. There is a pond called Yongdam within the temple grounds. It is regarded as one of the most beautiful ponds among those found in temple grounds across the country. Along with Hwangji Pond, it is a source of the Nakdong River. According to legend, a widowed mother with three devoted sons once turned into a dragon and, riding a dragon horse, took up residence in this pond.
