Sokcho Port

Sokcho Port is a port located close to downtown Sokcho, and it houses a passenger terminal that provides access to Russia and Baekdusan (Mount Paektu). The port's inner basin covers an area of 1.6 million square kilometers. Under the Port Act, it is classified as a first-class port. In 1905, the coastal shipping route was first established, making it a frequent port of call for coastal vessels. After the liberation on August 15, 1945, the country was divided along the 38th parallel, and the port came under North Korean control. It was designated as a designated port in 1962 and became an open port in 1964. Sokcho Port developed as a fishing port due to the abundant marine resources in the nearby seas, but it also played a significant role as an iron ore export port following the development of the Yangyang iron mine nearby. Additionally, it has been developed as a tourist port, situated along the scenic coastline near Seoraksan, one of Korea's leading tourist destinations. Major facilities include a wharf of 1,187 meters for berthing, and outer facilities such as a breakwater of 1,651 meters and a revetment of 1,842 meters. It is a fishing port whose main catch includes pollock, saury, and squid.
