Three-Story Stone Pagoda at Yongunsa Temple Site

The Three-Story Stone Pagoda at Yongunsa Temple Site is a Goryeo-period three-story stone pagoda standing next to a stone Buddha at the former site of Yongunsa Temple. Roof tiles inscribed with the name 'Yongunsa' were discovered around the pagoda, revealing the temple's name. The pagoda consists of a two-tiered base platform, a three-story pagoda body, and a finial at the top. On the uppermost stone of the base platform, a thick support stone adorned with lotus petals is placed to support the first-story body stone of the pagoda, a distinctive decorative technique popular during the Goryeo period. Each corner of the body stones features carved pillar shapes. The roof stones have four-tiered supports on their undersides, with gently sloping eaves that slightly upturn at the four corners. At the top, the finial is composed of a dew plate (noban), an inverted bowl-shaped ornament (bopbal), an upward lotus ornament (anghwa), and a wheel-shaped ornament (boryun) placed in sequence. Although the uppermost stone of the base platform has suffered some damage, the pagoda remains largely intact overall. While inheriting the Unified Silla pagoda style, it also exhibits distinctive Goryeo pagoda characteristics, such as the beautiful lotus-decorated support stone on the upper part of the base and the reduction of the roof stone underside supports to four tiers.
