Stone Seated Vairocana Buddha at Yongunsa Temple Site

The Stone Seated Vairocana Buddha at Yongunsa Temple Site was created in the early Goryeo Dynasty and follows the characteristics of Vairocana Buddha from the late Unified Silla Period. The Buddha's face is rendered in a rugged style, and the head is adorned with small snail-shaped curls. The hands are brought together at the chest, with the right hand over the left, and the right hand clasping the second finger of the left hand. This hand gesture, known as the wisdom fist (jigwonin), symbolizes the truth and is a distinctive feature of Vairocana Buddha statues. The pedestal supporting the Buddha is square in shape, with large lotus flowers carved on the top and bottom. In 1999, a halo (gwangbae) representing the light emanating from the body was discovered, completing the statue's full form.
