Mogusan Mountain

Mogusan Mountain is 1,066m above sea level and is adjacent between Nokjeon-ri, Jungdong-myeon and Nae-ri, Hadong-myeon. Mogusan is called by different names depending on the direction from which it is viewed. In Nokjeon-ri, Sansol-myeon, it is called Mogusan because many cattle were grazed there, and in Nae-ri, Kimsatgat-myeon, it is called Sangyeobong because the rocky peak resembles a funeral bier. Sangyeobong is also called Saengyebong in the local dialect of Yeongwol-gun. Okdongcheon Stream flows to the north and Naericheon Stream flows to the south, and the two streams converge west of Mogusan. Because it is such a remote area, it was a hideout for partisans after liberation, and in the 1960s, armed guerrillas from Uljin-Samcheok hid in this mountain, and the site of a house where they massacred civilians and their hideout are along the hiking trail. From the summit, one can see at a glance the scenic views of Taehwasan Mountain, Taebaeksan Mountain, and the Nokjeon-ri and Nae-ri valleys. In addition, there are various rock climbing courses of varying difficulty, making it a popular spot for rock climbing enthusiasts. In Nae-ri Valley on the southern foot, there are several fairly large campsites in operation, so visitors can enjoy the beautiful natural scenery of Mogusan while camping. There are two climbing courses for Mogusan: one starts from Nokjeon-ri, Sansol-myeon, and the other from Nae-ri, Kimsatgat-myeon. The Nokjeon-ri course begins at Eunghyeon-dong, Nokjeon-ri, Sansol-myeon, where National Route 31 connecting Yeongwol and Taebaek passes, and goes up to the main ridge via Mogusa Temple to reach the summit. From the summit, descend via the right path and at the fork go down to Jeolgol. Currently, the Nokjeon-ri course is the most common. The Nae-ri course in Kimsatgat-myeon starts from Soyachi and climbs to the summit.
