Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Yujeon-ri Samgut Village is a mountain village that preserves old traditions well, having kept a shrine dedicated about 350 years ago and practicing filial piety as a basic principle. Every New Year's Day, all former residents and villagers hold a joint New Year's bow to the village elders at the senior citizens' center. Samgut is a traditional cooking method in which food (such as potatoes and sweet potatoes) wrapped in hemp is placed on stones heated by fire, and water is poured over the stones to cook the food with the resulting hot steam. In 2009, Samgut Village boiled 10,000 ears of corn using samgut at the Yeongwol Donggang Festival and was registered in the Guinness World Records. Through this samgut, the village shares its spirit and culture, and offers tourists samgut experiences and various traditional cultural experiences. Every late September, the 'Matsutake Mushroom Picking Experience and Samgut Festival' is held to attract tourists who want mountain village experiences, offering not only samgut experiences but also traditional wedding ceremonies, matsutake mushroom picking, and ecological forest experiences. In addition, the village operates a small folk museum where visitors can glimpse the lifestyles of ancestors and a traditional meju (fermented soybean block) production facility using red clay, making it a good place to experience the traditional ways of life of ancestors.
