Gim Seong-rye's House

강원특별자치도 양양군 현남면 북분안길 106-9

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

This house is inhabited by the 17th-generation descendant of the Gimhae Gim clan. It was built by the current owner's 14th-generation great-grandfather and has been passed down to the present. Originally a thatched-roof house, it was re-roofed with tiles 60 years ago. The house is divided into an inner quarters (anchae) and a men's quarters (sarangchae). The anchae is a northern-style house that remains in the Yangyang area. A wide kitchen is placed on the left, and the right side is divided in the middle and then partitioned again to create six small rooms. The cowshed, which was extended in front of the kitchen, has been converted into a storage room. The sarangchae appears to have been added later; unlike the anchae, it has three large rooms and a wooden veranda outside that connects the rooms to one another. The main gate is a typical tall gate (soteuldae-mun), with a stable and a shed on the left side of the gate. On the right side of the entrance path, there is a lotus pond, which, along with the roofline of the sarangchae, adds to the beauty of the house.
