Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Gyoam Port is a fishing port located in Gyoam-ri, Toseong-myeon, Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do. It was designated and managed as a local port on May 4, 1972. It is a quiet port known for having Cheonhakjeong Pavilion, with a road connecting to Munam 2-ri Port along the coastline, bordering Munam-ri, Jukwang-myeon to the north. Gyoam was an area where the fisheries industry thrived since the Japanese colonial period, and it was the place on the East Coast where the most herring were caught. Herring fishing continued until liberation, and herring were also exported to Japan. Additionally, until about ten years ago, Gyoam was known for harvesting a large amount of seaweed, which grew abundantly around Meonseom and Apseom islands in the sea off Gyoam-ri.
