Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Durumoe Museum is a specialized folk life history museum that displays traditional household items collected over several decades by the founders, Kang Wi-su and Kim Ae-yeong. Durumoe is the name of the founders' hometown village, located in Jangdan County within the northern Military Demarcation Line. After spending their childhood in the hometown of Durumoe, which lost all traces of the village during the Korean War and became part of the Demilitarized Zone after the armistice, the museum was established about 20 km south of that location, embodying the pain of division and the artistic spirit of love for their hometown. The permanent exhibition hall features themes such as earthenware and ceramics, masks, clothing, food, and shelter, modern and contemporary life, and agricultural life. Outdoors, items such as totem poles (jangseung and sotdae), a mill, a blacksmith's forge, a shed, a shingle-roofed house (neowajip), a field watchman's hut (wondumak), and a jar terrace (jangdokdae) have been restored, allowing visitors to observe the old way of life.
