Paju Historical Site Related to Yi I

This is the historic site of Yulgok Yi I (1536–1584), a Confucian scholar and statesman of the mid-Joseon period. Yi I further developed the scholarship of Toegye Yi Hwang and laid the foundation for Joseon Neo-Confucianism, distinct from Chinese Neo-Confucianism, leaving a profound legacy in Korea's intellectual history.

The Paju Yi I Historic Site encompasses the Jaun Seowon (Confucian academy) dedicated to Yulgok Yi I, and the family burial grounds including the tombs of Yulgok Yi I and his mother, Shin Saimdang. It is a representative site for relics related to Yulgok Yi I, holding significant locational value as a place where cultural heritage originating from one individual is gathered.
